Today´s word #1 — Autopsy, which is spelled Autopsia in Portuguese.

So the family decides (meaning the spouse) to spend the weekend in Itapeva, in the state of Minas Gerais, adjacent to Sao Paulo.  (Also, yet another example of my prominent initials as Minas Gerais is shortened as MG.)  The resort is only 80 miles from Sao Paulo, so should take about 90-120 minutes depending on traffic.  Unfortunately, due to heavy rain in Sao Paulo and the need to pick up the mom-in-law, were already going to take more time.

About 2/3rds of the way there, traffic stops.  It had to be an accident.  Unfortunately for the occupants of the car, it was.  In the end , it took 5 hours to make the drive.

We had a nice time over the weekend, though — pool, kids´ disco, horse riding, mini-circus.  Sunday being the last day of vacation before school starts, we decided to risk staying a bit longer to make the most of the time.

We had just started the return trip when we saw a sign for the toll booth in 2 miles.  Again, traffic stopped.  Seemed like a lot of traffic for a toll booth.  It was.  Turns out there was another accident.

So like most people, we sit there complaining about the traffic, figuring it is nothing major (isn´t that what we always figure?).  Just then, an ambulance-like van passes.  It says Autopsia Fernao Dias (Fernao Dias is the name of the highway).  So I am thinking, ´´wow, must be a bad accident. ´´  Turns out there were two such vans, and I am thinking that each one must fit more than one victim.

So I say to YesCPG that it is not looking good as I just noticed these vans.  She says she does not want to see, and let´s ensure the kids do not notice, or look out the window.

Slowly we reach the scene of the accident.  We pass the two vans.  I then notice the writing on the side of the car again: Autopista Fernao Dias.  Did you catch the difference?

Autopista not AUTOPSIA.

AUTOPISTA means Freeway.

They were not Autopsy cars, they were Freeway Assistance Vans — essentially ambulances.

Oops, nevermind (regards to Emily Littela).

Well, I am sure this will not be the final episode of ´Fun with Portuguese.´  So tune in later.

Mas, antes de Atibaia, o transito parou.  Devia ter sido um acidente.  E infelizmente para os ocupantes dos carros, foi.  Demorou ainda mais duas horas na estrada.  Em total, foi 5 horas de viagem.  Saco!

Mas, divertimos muito durante o finde — piscina, mini-circo, boate.  na tarde de domingo saímos para a viagem de volta.  Sabíamos que estávamos arriscando, porque foi o ultimo fim de semana antes de começar as aulas.  Mas tudo bem, ia dar certo.

Estava bem no começo da volta quando vimos uma placa para pedágio em 2km.  O transito parou.  Uau, muito transito para pedágio, mas só 2km, sim?  Mas não foi.  A gente percebeu que o Fernão Dias sofreu outro acidente.

Estava demorando tanto, e, como a maioria das pessoas, ficamos reclamando.  então, um carro oficial nos passou e eu li no lado do carro “Autopsia Fernão Dias.”  Senti, imediatamente, culpado por reclamar.  Falei para YesCPG que não ia ser nada bom, porque vi este carro.  YesCPG falou para a gente não dizer nada para que as crianças não notassem nada.

Devagar a gente abordou o lugar de acidente. Nao só tinha um carro de autopsia, mas dois.  Pensei: cada carro de autopsia deve caber mais que uma vitima.  Tristeza.

Finalmente, chegamos ao lado da acidente.  Vi de novo os dois carros, e percebi:  não falou Autopsia, mas “Autopista Fernao Dias.”  Autopista?  Autopista!

Claro — so bobo.  Qual estrada tem carro especial para autopsia?

Meu deus, tenho que estudar mais, ou verificar a forca de meus lentes de contato.  Vergonha!

49ers Cheerleaders — Onde Futebol Americano supera Futebol Brasileiro

E obvio que em geral, o Brasileiro tem mais paixão para esporte, realmente futebol, que tem o Americano.  Mas temos paixão também, só não estamos acostumados a brigar contra desconhecidos depois de uma derrota.

Mas quero dividir uma historia triste de um Americano aqui em São Paulo, que sofreu por causa de um jogo, de longa distancia.  Para os que gostou meu primeiro blog de esporte aqui no Brasil, bem-vindo de volta.  Para novos seguidores, bem-vindo.

Enquanto o Brasil tem um esporte, os EUA tem quatro principais — Futebol Americano, Beisebol, Basquete e Hoquei no Gelo.  Tambem, alem dos profissionais, temos as ligas U.  Ligas universitárias você pergunta?  Sim.  Tem universidades que tem estádios de futebol americano que cabe mais de 100.000 pessoas e estão lotados cada fim de semana que tem jogo.  E o torneio para coroar o campeonato de Basquete universitária vale mais que $1B por ano.  Sim, um bilhão.  Então, o Americano normalmente tem 4-6 times para que ele torce.

Consideram eu, YesMSG.  Fiz Universidade de California, Berkeley.  Meu time de basquete tem ganho um titulo de liga só (não contando títulos compartilhados) em 50 anos.  Meu time de futebol não tinha ganho a liga (não contando títulos divididos) desde 1959.  Nem eu estava vivo nesta época.  então, imagina o stress que levo cada temporada.

Mas, voltando as ligas profissionais, sou de San Francisco, e torço para os SF Giants de beisebol, os 49ers de futebol, e os Warriors de basquete.*  Faz dois anos, os Giants de beisebol ganho o primeiro titulo desde 1954.  A ultima vez que os Warriors qualificou para o pos-temporada foi 2007, e este foi a primeira vez desde 1992.  Para vocês que não sao bom em matematica, este e uma vez qualificando para o pos-temporada em 20 anos.  E como a lacuna de Corintians de 23 anos, ou sendo Botafoguense hoje, que eu também sou**.  E em basquete, mais de 50% dos times qualificam pas o pos-temporada.  Vergonha total.  Quase tem que esforçar para NAO qualificar.

* Nunca ouviu falar dos Warriors?  Depois de ler o paragrafo acima, faz sentido, não?

** Li Estrela Solitária sobre Mane Garrincha, e virei Botafoguense.  Minha felicidade fica nas mãos (nos pes?) do um Uruguaio que se chama Loco Abreu.  Estou ferrado.

Em resumo, a maioria dos meus times (nao sei a traducao em portugues) SUCK!

Mas, por sorte, os 49ers foram meu salvador.  Liderado pelo incomparavel Joe Montana, ganharam o Super Bowl em 1981, 1984, 1988, 1989, e 1994 (ultimo com Steve Young como Quarterback).  E o resto da década de 90s foram competitivos.  Mas começando em 2003, viraram um time ruim e patético.  Mas, o ano passado, contratou um novo técnico.  O time fez uma virada quase inédito e domingo jogou nos semi-finais de NFL (Liga de Futebol Americano).

Para compartilhar mais contexto, lembra que escrevi que os 49ers ganharam o Super Bowl em 1988, 1989.  Pois, o time ia ganhar o terceiro consecutivo em 1990.  Estava jogando nos semi-finais, e estava quase o fim do jogo.  Meu time tinha posse da bola e estava esperando so o tempo acabar.  Mas, um jogador deixou a bola cair, e o oponente a pegou.  Eles fizeram três pontos ao fim do jogo para ganhar, e meu time foi eliminado.

Para fazer as coisas pior, estava na Inglaterra, e tive que ficar acordado na madrugada para assistir o jogo, sozinho.

Voltando ao presente.  Por acaso, os 49ers estavam jogando domingo contra o mesmo time de 1990 — os New York Giants.  O jogo foi bem competitivo com muita defesa.  Acabou empatado 17-17.  Prorrogação – Morte Súbita.

Os 49ers pararam os Giants e os Giants tinham que chutar a bola para os 49ers.  Que aconteceu?  O cara nos 49ers, como em 1990, deixou cair a bola e ficou no posse dos Giants.  E para piorar a situação, aconteceu perto do gol dos 49ers.  Deja-poo.

Um minuto depois, os Giants fizeram 3 pontos tão fáceis, que teria sido como um penalti no futebol brasileiro, SEM GOLEIRO.  Meu time, como aconteceu faz 20+ anos, foi eliminado um jogo antes do campeonato.  E, de novo, fiquei acordado ate a madrugada, e tive ninguém com quem podia lamentar.

Felizmente, sai na rua as 2h de manha e achei um grupo de amigos novos (infelizmente, não os Cheerleaders) que me apresentaram para meu atual melhor amigo:

Então, americanos, mesmo que não cantam, ficam de pé, ou xingar o outro time, sofrem como qualquer fa do esporte.  Para mais prova, assiste Catching Hell que conta a historia dos Chicago Cubs e os Red Sox de Boston.  [Para contexto,os Cubs não tem ganho a liga de beisebol em mais de 100 anos (como Corintians e Libertadores), e Boston passou 86 anos entre títulos.]

Conversely, Mr. Bundchen has his third out of four poor playoff outing, and should have suffered a playoff loss.  Let’s put this in model terms: it would be like Gisele, instead of showing up like this:

RPG I has embarked on the training it takes to be a Jason Bourne-like asset for US/Brazilian Special Operations, or as we like to call it at home:  Spetsialnogo Naznacheniya (Spetsnaz).

As we all know, languages are a prerequisite — not a problem, he is bi-lingual and will be tri shortly.

He needs to understand technology. Check!

He has to train for hand to hand combat.  Whether immobilizing a threat….

…Or just taking down the baby sister after having rendered the Teddy Bear unconscious…

He learns to show no mercy.

And let us not forget the strategic use of heavy armaments.

RPG ironically using an RPG (Rocket Propelled Grenade).

So what is the result of all this training?

• Saving the World Jack Bauer style?
• Carrying out secret missions, a la Bourne?
• Thwarting megalomaniacs, like 007?

Nope.

Like most of man’s pursuits, the goal is women.

Which is where she comes in:

We are leaving the gym after the latest combat training, when a woman, extremely similar to this one but for whom I did not have the Mission Impossible Eye Camera handy, asks RPG I if he would like to be her trainer.  His knowledge of languages and technology, his ability to protect her, and his dominance of Lego Stars for the XBox, obviously came through in a single word we call “Charisma.”

Now let’s jump to Mission Impossible.  For my younger readers, it was actually a series on television a long long time ago.  In other words, it did not start with Ethan Hunt (Tom Cruise).  In fact, there was no Ethan Hunt.  Mr. Phelps was the star.  Yes, that is right, the Mr. Phelps who Cruise made the villain in Mission Impossible 1.  I could almost never forgive him for this.  Even by Hollywood standards, taking the main star and turning him bad so that you could assume the stage as the principal character was the height of hubris.  I know, and egotistical Hollywood star, get out!  But still…..It is like taking Mr. Brady (of the Brady Bunch, not Mr. Bundchen) and making him a pedophile.

Ethan Hunt was never going to fill the gap between 007 and Jason Bourne.

Regardless, though, of my personal opinion, I still thought that MI 1 was totally confusing, but had good stunts and Ving Rhames and Jean Reno (easily the finest French actor working in Spy/Assassin oriented US films (see Ronin and The Professional with Natalie Portman for evidence)).  MI 2 had Thandie Newton I think, but remember nothing else.  As for MI III, it had Maggie Q and Philip Seymour Hoffman, who was rather convincing as the villain, despite the fact that it was hard to imagine him beating up Ethan Hunt.*

* Why is it that the good guys, who can beat up nine armed, trained killers, simultaneously, will always have their toughest hand-to-hand combat with the villain, even if the guy is an arthritic octogenarian?

However, MI 4 was fun.  Light on dialog and fast on the pace.  Even tried to inject a little humor, which seems rather new for Cruise since his days of Risky Business.  And the film does feature Paula Patton, who was quite a delight, even if she is married to Alan Thicke’s son (not worth the link).

But most important was the performance of Jeremy Renner.   The Bourne Ultimatum was probably the best way to end the series.  But, of course, the producers, and my man–crush, Matt Damon, will do another film.  While my head says No, my Self-Defense mechanism says Yes.  Nevertheless, this film is on hold.  So in the interim, they plan on making another film, The Bourne Legacy, with Renner playing a new character, Aaron Cross.

I was skeptical of his choice, just as I was of Damon; however, his performance in MI 4 gave me confidence that as an actor, and athlete, and a comedian (he had some good one liners), that the Bourne Legacy has a chance, and that if it does well, could even lead to a good Renner-Damon team up in Re-Bourne*, the passing of the torch from Matt to Jeremy.

* My title, not officially from Universal, Warner, Paramount, etc.

Primeiro, tenho que admitir que sofro de Défecit de Atenção (Attention Deficit Disorder em inglês). Isto tem consequências boas.  Por exemplo, eu posso ver televisão e fazer tarefas, anda e mastiga chiclete, e trabalhar e blog/tweet/Facebook.  Mas, não lado ruim, quando vou para a academia, preciso algo para ler, ouvir ou ver.

Hoje de manha, estava indo para a academia quando percebi que meu telefone (que toca musica) estava sem força.  Obviamente, AES São Paulo me ferrou, porque o aparelho ficou fora da tomada.  Americano não tem culpa de nada.  Desesperado de não passar uma hora de meu workout Schwarzenegger em silencio, tentei de descobrir uma solução.  Cheguei nas esteiras e vi meu sonho.  Marcos (sonho) e Tiago Maranhao (distribuidor de sonho).  Por que?

Me deixam rebobinar um pouco.  @YesMSG veio para o Brasil pela primeira vez em 1994 (sim, sou mais velho que vocês).  Foi pouco depois de morte chocante de Ayrton Senna, mas antes da Copa do Mundo ´94.  Então, o pais estava saindo da tristeza e entrando o otimismo da Seleçao.  Voltei aos EUA como uma grande fã do Brasil, ate o ponto que eu, de verdade, torci para Brasil contra os EUA na nossa dia de independência (04/07/1994).  Sabia que para EUA já foi um sucesso a Copa, mas o Brasil precisou uma vitoria.  E meu amor para ´´Sai que e sua Taffarel`´ superou minha raiva do cotovelo de Leonardo na cabeça de Tab Ramos.  Ao fim, fique tão feliz como se fosse Brasileiro quando ganhou Brasil contra Itália.

Vamos pular ate 1998.  Por sorte, estava trabalhando aqui no Brasil num projeto com Pão de Açucar.  Cheguei em junho, então passei todo o julho louco para os jogos da Copa, assistindo no Mansão, Fazenda, Chacara e Avião de Abilio Diniz*.  E fique tão deprimido depois do final.

Tão estranho.  Ronaldo com ataque de nervos?  Nike pressionando o CBF para que ele jogasse?  França?  França?  Para Americano, França e o pais que se rendeu para Alemanha antes de cruzou a fronteira a primeira Volkswagen.  E este time superou o Brasil?  Meu Deus, 1950 de novo.  E ultimo, Zidane.  OK, ele foi um gênio, e foi a única coisa que fez sentido neste dia.

Pulando de novo para 2002.  Passei a primeira fase da Copa nos EUA assistindo os jogos do Brasil a qualquer hora.  Por sorte, e pelo amor para YesCPG, passei a segunda fase aqui no Brasil.  Então, quando a Seleçao (que foi, para mim, uma seleção de estrelas — Ronaldo, Ronaldinho, Rivaldo, Cafu, Roberto Carlos, e MARCOS) ganhou contra Alemanha (os Argentinos de futebol da Europa) e ´´a muralha,´´ Olivier Kahn, tirou o gosto ruim de 1998.  Isto e porque Marcos e importante.

(E verdade que meus dois cunhados e meu filho são Palmeirenses, mas sou Botafoguense**; danem-se.)

Voltando ao presente: cheguei nas esteiras e estava passando o série incomparável de entrevistas entre Tiago e Marcos no SportTV.  Perfeito — posso correr, que eu odeio, e assistir o melhor repórter da esporte no Brasil (como versão Brasileiro de Erin Andrews, se menos bonito).

Mas, meu pesadelo não acabou aqui.  As esteiras tem TV incluído.  Quando ligue, estava passando esta programa bosta com a Velha e o Papagaio.  FDP.  Comecei de teclar a tela, mas não funcionou.  A esteira não e exatamente um iPad.  A reportagem de Tiago não ia durar muito tempo como um Podcast.  Pressa, Pressa, Pressa.

Não deu.    Acabou programa, atrasou meu treinamento, um desastre.  Não como Tsunami, mas mesmo assim, desastre minúsculo.

Mas, felizmente, como a Resurrecão***, @tmaranhao tinha posto os links**** para assistir mais tarde.  Salvado!

Well, let´s add a chapter.

Despite the fact that the ´signature´ has been an approved method of confirmation; despite the fact that a typed letter has served as a perfectly acceptable form of correspondence (at least since Guttenberg (press, not Steve)); despite the fact that a scanned PDF or a signed Fax is enough to fulfill legal requirements…..I have had to write, by hand, two letters here while in Brazil.

1. Union.  When you begin to work in a technology company, you are automatically signed up the the Tech Workers Union.  To avoid this, you must HANDWRITE a letter to them requesting your exit from the union, and then HAND DELIVER it to the Union HQ. 
2. Health Plan. I want to remove a dependent from my health plan since she is already covered by another one.  I have to write a HANDWRITTEN letter to the Insurance Company requesting her departure.  I also have to provide a motive that, presumably, is not ´´because I don´t want to pay $200 per month when I cannot use the coverage.´´

Considering the current young generation — Gen Z — will do everything by touch screen, how will they handwrite anything in 2025?

Now for those of you who don´t know, I am a bit of an obsessive compulsive Twitter addict.  In fact, I had to add Hootsuite so that I could decide which posts went to Facebook, as my Facebook acquaintances were complaining that I was pollluting their walls with my Tweets.  Blame duly accepted.

So one of my favorite things, and I think you should try it, is to read Twitter either during a sporting event, or after one that you did not see.  It is better (different?) than a typical recap, in that you can capture the opinions of those you follow as the action happens.  For football, I highly recommend:

However, this morning, something funny happened.  I have been working in the technology world for over 10 years.  Therefore, I also follow some tech Tweeters, including some from Microsoft.  Turns out that the Consumer Electronics Show (CES) was having its keynote with Steve Ballmer about the same time as the Crimson Tide was sticking it to the Tigers.

So interspersed with all of the BCS Championship commentary was a bunch of tweets promoting the keynote and encouraging people to watch, read, attend, etc.

Not sure there is a Neilsen for CES Keynotes, otherwise, would love to see the results of Ballmer (Microsoft)+Elop (Nokia)+De La Vega (AT&T) versus Madhatter (LSU) and Nick (Bama).

Really?  Who knows?

(Admittedly, YesMSG will not be watching.  Not only does the game start at 11:30pm, but I only slept 3 hours since RPG I decided to wake me up during his somnambulance just so I could watch him miss the ´pool´and wee wee all over the bathroom floor.  But I digress.) 

Everyone in the South (intellectual capital of the USA* if you count the German engineers who created the space program), says the SEC is the dominant football conference.  This includes fans of Ole Miss, Miss. State, Vandy (hot chix though), Kentucky, etc.  Yes, I agree that Bama and LSU are two elite programs, but consider this:

• Do you know who Jordan Jefferson, Jarrett Lee and AJ McCarron are?  They are your district managers at Walmart next year.  The teams´ QBs are nothing to fear
• Alabama´s best player is Trent Richardson, and he is great.  Stop him, though, and stop ´Bama
• LSU´s best offensive player is a Cornerback/Punt Returner, the Honey Badger
• Do you think their defenses have ever faced anyone like Andrew Luck?  Only one of top three most celebrated College QB´s (along with Elway and P. Manning) of the past 30 years?  No
• And how about a combo like Brandon Wheeden and Justin Blackmon?  Blackmon is an absolute monster, and could be the second pick in the draft behind Luck
• So while SEC myopia claims that the Ok State and Stanford defenses are bad, I am not so sure they are not good enough to hold the score down on the Tigers and Tide
• Consider the Offense (Stan; OSU) v the Defense (LSU; Bama) to be the proverbial Irresistable Force v the Immovable Object; however,
• The opposite is also true: Offense (LSU; Bama) v Defense (Stan; OSU) is the Resistable Force v the Movable Object
• Finally, if it were all defense, then the Ravens would have multiple Super Bowl titles and no one would be talking about the Patriots (horrible secondary) and Packers (last ranked D) as potential Super Bowl victors

So there you have it.  Barring an LSU blowout like 34-3, the true champion will be in as much doubt as before the BCS era.
