Some things I learned

Posted by msgpdr on December 30, 2007

So while esconced in research for my loyal reader — yes, reader, I found out a couple of things that if true are interesting.  I imagine to avoid charges of plagiarism or I should include attribution or the links, but I don’t feel like going in search again.  But let this disclaimer serve for all postings on this site:

I read a lot of stuff and when I quote it, it is obvious I read it and did not unearth it.  So I am not taking credit for anything that is obviously not my opinion.  Don’t sue me.

#1 Supposedly, Peter Warrick, former 4th pick in draft by the Bengals but now out of the league, is managing an Applebee’s.  Ok, so his career did not go as well as he would have liked, but given that he must have made a few million, I find this hard to believe, or he had the worst financial advisor in history.

#2 Derek Anderson, QB of the Cleveland Browns, is from a very small Oregon town — Scappoose I think.  Anyway, one year behind him in High School was the 2007 Playmate of the Year.  (No, I don’t know her name and have not seen her pics.) Amazing production for a small town.

2007 CFB Bowl “Predictions”

Posted by msgpdr on December 30, 2007

Here are my bowl predictions.  Needless to say, I did not do a lot of stat research.  I will update as the games go along, potentially a pre-Jan 1st, a pre-National Title, and a post National Title game.  But hey, I don’t get paid for this so who knows.

To all College Football Fans, this is long, but IMHO worth the read (of course, I wrote it but still consider myself unbiased and objective):

·         Seeing that I was a Torn ACL (Dennis Dixon – Ore) and a Dislocated Thumb (Pat White – WVU) from predicting the National Title game over two months ago, I figured it only right that I make some bowl prognostications and editorial comments as well.

·         Of course, I was also correct about Cal controlling its own destiny, I just did not know its own destiny would be a redux of the 1995 Mariucci team, with a total collapse to the Armed Forces Bowl.  However, it is ironically patriotic for a school known for its liberalism and for forming the backbone to the anti-Vietnam war effort, to choose to support our hard working, at risk troops in Iraq, Afghanistan and worldwide, by playing none other than Air Force in a bowl that honors the armed services.  Personally, I am proud of Nate and the gang, who did nothing that might have resulted in them actually supporting California Agriculture and a Nut company by beating Stanford and going to the Emerald Bowl.

·         [Note, to pre-empt the obvious, ‘you are not busy enough’ retorts regarding this email, consider the following:

o   Save It!

o   If I find that entertaining my friends is equally if not more memorable than the “Clifton account” then be happy that I include you on this list; this email will be more memorable than whatever you would have been working on instead

o   Don’t blame me because I am brutally efficient and can fit it all in, and I have my priorities in line

o   Respond with “unsubscribe” in the body of the text and I will not send you email again]

·         Now first, a BCS primer, as I cannot believe the complexity of this thing:

o   Conference Champion Tie-Ins:

§  Big 10 (11) and Pac-10 – Rose

§  Big 12 – Fiesta

§  ACC – Orange

§  SEC – Sugar

§  Big East – automatic, but no bowl affiliation

o   At large (4)

§  Any other BCS Conference team in Top 14 is eligible

§  Any non-BCS conference team in Top 12 is guaranteed

§  Notre Dame if they have like 4 wins, or Charlie Weis gives up Big Macs for a week

§  (There are other criteria, but these are the main ones)

o   No conference can have more than two BSC teams

o   Selection

§  Title Game takes 1 and 2

§  Bowl that loses Number 1 team, gets first choice at replacement – this year it was the Rose, who INEXPLICABLY took 3 loss Illinois (note, this filled the Big 10 allotment)

·         Note, the SEC, which was losing the number 2 team, had the right to ‘protect’ Georgia, preventing the Rose from taking them, but supposedly made no such move.  So we could have had an intriguing SC-UGA matchup, instead of …….(read below)

§  Bowl that loses #2 team gets next choice – Sugar took Georgia (This filled SEC allotment)

§  Then via a predetermined rotation, the next bowl in line, Orange, which already has a tie in to ACC (Va Tech) got to choose, and REALLY INEXPLICABLY took Kansas, over, for instance, Missouri, Arizona State (this filled Big12 allotment)

§  Two spots remained, but two teams had guaranteed bids – Big East Champ, and, this year, WAC Champ Hawaii by virtue of being #12 in BCS standings

·         Fiesta took WVU

·         Sugar was left with Hawaii

§  The choice of Kansas, and to some extent, Rose choice of Illinois, kept more deserving teams like ASU and Missouri out of BSC Bowls.  Missouri somewhat rebounds with cool NY Day matchup with Arkansas; ASU screwed with UT in Pacific Sun Holiday Bowl on Dec 27th

On to the picks!  In CAPS for reading.

2007-08 College Football Bowl Schedule

BOWL LOCATION DATE/TIME NETWORK

San Diego County Credit Union Poinsettia

Utah vs. Navy  San Diego  Dec. 20, 9 p.m.  ESPN HD

THE SAN DIEGO CREDIT UNION GETS A BOWL, AND A WUSSY, XMAS POISONOUS PLANT THEMED ONE.  WHO CARES, BUT I SUPPORT OUR TROOPS AND NAVY WILL WIN; IF NOT THE TERRORISTS DO, SO ARE YOU WITH ME?  BTW, NAVY QB IS NAMED: Kaipo-Noa Kaheaku-Enhada AND THEIR NEW COACH IS KEN NIUMATALOLO, SO THAT SHOULD MAKE THIS THE MOST EXCITING BROADCAST TO TUNE INTO SINCE THE SERBS MADE THE WORLD CHAMPIONSHIP HOOP FINALS.  HOPEFULLY, THEY FOUND ANNOUNCERS WITH PREVIOUS EXPERIENCE PRONOUNCING ANFERNEE, DONTARIOUS AND DWYANE.

R+L Carriers New Orleans Bowl

Memphis vs. Florida Atlantic  New Orleans  Dec. 21, 8 p.m.  ESPN2 HD

WHO IS R&L CARRIERS ANYWAY?  HAPPY TO HELP POST KATRINA NEW ORLEANS BY PICKING FLA ATLANTIC SINCE HOWARD SCHNELLENBERGER WON A CHAMPIONSHIP AT MIAMI 23 YEARS AGO, AND DEANGELO SOMEONE EX MEMPHIS) NOW PLAYS ON SUNDAYS

Papajohns.com Bowl

Southern Miss vs. Cincinnati  Birmingham, Ala.  Dec. 22, 1 p.m.  ESPN2 HD

OK, PIZZA OUTLETS ARE THE WAY TO GO; SCREW GOOGLE AND THE REST OF THE STARTUPS.  THINK OF ALL THE PIZZA CHAINS YOU KNOW AND NOW CONSIDER:

PAPAJOHNS IS SO HUGE THAT THEY SPONSOR THE STADIUM FOR THE UNIVERSITY OF LOUISVILLE, AND THEIR WEBSITE, THEIR WEBSITE FOR GOODNESS SAKES, CAN SPONSOR A BOWL GAME.  COUPLE THIS WITH THE FACT THAT EX DOMINOES OWNER WAS OWNER OF DETROIT TIGERS, AND CURRENT LITTLE CAESAR’S PIZZA OWNER IS OWNER OF DETROIT TIGERS AND DETROIT RED WINGS (NHL FOR THOSE OF YOU WITHOUT VERSUS NETWORK).  SUCCESS RATE FOR PIZZA IS MUCH HIGHER THAN TECH STARTUPS, BIOTECH, ETC.

OH, CINCINNATI WITH WAKE FOREST TRANSFER BEN MAUK WILL WIN, DESPITE EMOTIONAL LAST GAME FOR JEFF BOWER AT SO MISS (BRETT FAV-RE ALMA MATER)

New Mexico

Nevada vs. New Mexico  Albuquerque, N.M.  Dec. 22, 4:30 p.m.  ESPN HD

IS IT AUTOMATIC THAT THE NEW MEXICO BOWL TAKES NEW MEXICO.  ANYWAY, REGGIE THEUS COACHES THE KINGS AND URLACHER IS ON DA BEARS, SO I PICK NEVADA  (PLUS, NATE BURLESON OF THE SEAHAWKS WENT THERE)

Pioneer Las Vegas

UCLA vs. BYU  Las Vegas  Dec. 22, 8 p.m.  ESPN HD

DORRELL FIRED, NO ONE CARES, BYU PLAYERS ARE NOT AS LIKELY TO FIND TROUBLE IN VEGAS – BYU IN A WALKOVER

Sheraton Hawaii

Boise State vs. East Carolina  Honolulu  Dec. 23, 8 p.m.  ESPN

WOW, BOISE IS NOT A STATE, AND NEITHER IS EAST CAROLINA, BUT WHICH GEOGRAPHICALLY CHALLENGED PLAYERS WILL BE MOST IMPACTED BY THE POLYNESIAN BEAUTIES OF THE BIG ISLAND. SINCE BOISE IS IN HAWAII’S CONFERENCE, LESS DISTRACTION FOR THEM, SO THEY WIN

Motor City

Purdue vs. Central Michigan  Detroit  Dec. 26, 7:30 p.m.  ESPN HD

HMMM, CENTRAL MICHIGAN HAS A HOT SHOT QB, BUT THE CAMPUS IS IN MT. PLEASANT, SO THEY WILL BE UNAWARE OF THE DANGERS OF DETROIT, WHEREAS, PURDUE IS NEAR GARY, INDIANA, SO THE DETROIT ‘NIGHTLIFE’ SHOULD BE LESS OF A PROBLEM; BUT YOU KNOW, GOING WITH THE UPSET – CENTRAL MICHIGAN

Pacific Life Holiday

Arizona State vs. Texas  San Diego  Dec. 27, 8 p.m.  ESPN HD

CAL REVISITED – DISAPPOINTED NON-BCS TEAM ASU LOSES TO TEXAS – PUKE!

Champs Sports

Boston College vs. Michigan State  Orlando, Fla.  Dec. 28, 5 p.m.  ESPN HD

MICHIGAN STATE ALWAYS CHOKES, AND MATT RYAN GOES OUT WELL.  AT LEAST CHAMPS SPORTS IS SPORTS RELATED

Texas

TCU vs. Houston  Houston  Dec. 28, 8 p.m.  NFL Network

WOW, THIS IS ON THE NFL NETWORK AND IT IS A STUPID MINOR BOWL.  MY PREDICTION IS THIS IS THE LOWEST RATED BOWL OF PERHAPS ALL TIME.  OTHER THAN THAT I GO WITH THE HORNED FROGS SINCE THE HOUSTON COACH IS GOING TO COACH SOMEWHERE ELSE.  YES, GOING AGAINST THE HOME FIELD ADVANTAGE.  TEXAS BOWL – DOUBLE PUKE!

Emerald

Maryland vs. Oregon State  San Francisco  Dec. 28, 8:30 p.m.  ESPN HD

OREGON STATE ON A ROLE AND MARYLAND STINKS.  THIS BOWL WILL BE NUTS – GET IT, NUTS! I WILL BE HERE ALL WEEK

Meineke Car Care

UConn vs. Wake Forest  Charlotte, N.C.  Dec. 29, 1 p.m.  ESPN HD

THIS IS MY CHOICE AS THE HEIR APPARENT TO THE POULAN WEEDEATER BOWL – UCONN V WAKE FOREST AND NOW I FOREVER ABANDON MIDAS AND GO TO MEINEKE.  UCONN IN A SQEAKER – WHY?  NO IDEA.

AutoZone Liberty

UCF vs. Mississippi State  Memphis, Tenn.  Dec. 29, 4:30 p.m.  ESPN HD

I AM PULLING FOR SLYVESTER CROOM – IF YOU DON’T KNOW WHO HE IS, YOU MAY NEED SOME DIVERSITY TRAINING.  BUT UCF DOES HAVE A FAMOUS EX-NOTRE DAME FOR ONE DAY COACH, AND THE NATION’S LEADING RUSHER.  STILL GOING WITH THE SEC.

Valero Alamo

Penn State vs. Texas A&M  San Antonio  Dec. 29, 8 p.m.  ESPN HD

IS THERE A WORSE SOUNDING BOWL – VALERO ALAMO.  SAY IT OUT LOUD.  PENN STATE WILL WIN AS A&M LOST THEIR COACH SINCE HIS $2m PER YEAR WAS NOT ENOUGH AND HAD TO SELL A NEWSLETTER FOR $1200 TO BOOSTERS – OOPS.  ACTUALLY, BOTH THESE TEAMS STINK.

PetroSun Independence

Alabama vs. Colorado  Shreveport, La.  Dec. 30, 8 p.m.  ESPN HD

PETRO SUN?  AM I SUPPOSED TO GO LOOK FOR OIL REFINED BY THEM OR SOMETHING.  IS THAT WHAT THEY DO?  COLORADO WAS MEDIOCRE ALL YEAR, WHEREAS, BAMA WAS UP THEN STUNK IT UP.  PLUS, THEIR QB HAS 3 NAMES – JOHN DAVID PARKER – SO I AM GOING WITH THE COACH’S SON AND COLORADO QB CODY HAWKINS, BECAUSE THAT IS A MUCH COOLER NAME.  BTW, NICE $4M BAMA SPENT ON SABAN TO HAVE SAME RECORD THAT SHULA DID, AND TO LOSE THE IRON BOWL AS WELL!

Bell Helicopter Armed Forces

California vs. Air Force  Fort Worth, Texas  Dec. 31, 12:30 p.m.  ESPN

LIKE 1995, WE SUCK AT END OF SEASON, THEN LOSE TO ARMED FORCES TEAM.  WE HAVE NO MOTIVATION AND CANNOT STOP THAT WEIRD WISHBONE.  HOWEVER, I WILL BUY A BELL HELICOPTER, OTHERWISE, THE TERRORISTS WIN.

Roady’s Humanitarian

Georgia Tech vs. Fresno State  Boise, Idaho  Dec. 31, 2 p.m.  ESPN2

ROADY’S?  ANYONE, ANYONE, BUELLER?  I PICK FRESNO STATE AS GA TECH HAS NO COACH, AND NO CALVIN JOHNSON, WHO ALWAYS SHOWED UP SMALL IN BIG GAMES ANYWAY.  FRESNO STATE HAS GRIT – YOU WOULD HAVE TO TO GO TO SCHOOL THERE

Brut Sun

South Florida vs. Oregon  El Paso, Texas  Dec. 31, 2 p.m.  CBS

SOUTH FLA AS I WILL NOW BE QUARTERBACKING OREGON

Gaylord Hotels Music City

Kentucky vs. Florida State  Nashville, Tenn.  Dec. 31, 4 p.m.  ESPN HD

THIS IS THE DUMBEST BOWL NAME.  ANDRE WOODSON RETURNS TO EARLY SEASON HYPE AND PUTS DOWN THE NOLES

Insight

Indiana vs. Oklahoma State  Tempe, Ariz.  Dec. 31, 6 p.m.  NFL Network

NO IDEA WHAT THIS COMPANY DOES, AND ON NFL NETWORK SO NO ONE CAN WATCH (EXCEPT ME).  PUTS THE HEARTWARMING STORY OF IU AND THE MEMORY OF THEIR DECEASED COACH AGAINST MIKE “I AM A MAN, I AM 40” GUNDY.  OK STATE IS PROBABLY BETTER, BUT WHO WANTS TO ROOT FOR THAT TOOL – ALL HOOSIERS FOR THIS ONE

Chick-fil-A

Clemson vs. Auburn  Atlanta  Dec. 31, 7:30 p.m.  ESPN HD

TOMMY BOWDEN BLOWS ALL BIG GAMES – AUBURN IN A ROUT (PS, THE AVERAGE CHIK FIL A EARNS $100K FOR ITS OWNER – BUY A FEW FRANCHISES, AND YOU ARE ALMOST THE PIZZA GUY.  PORN AND FATTENING FOODS IS THE WAY TO WEALTH; HOW DID WE MISS THIS?  COME TO THINK OF IT, WHY ISN’T TOP DOG (CAL-BERKELEY EATERY) NATIONAL?)

Outback

Wisconsin vs. Tennessee  Tampa, Fla.  Jan. 1, 2008, 11 a.m.  ESPN HD

DID YOU ALL KNOW THAT JOHN MADDEN AND VINNY TESTAVERDE WERE EARLY INVESTORS IN THE OUTBACK STEAK HOUSE AND MADE FORTUNES ON IT.  THEY OBVIOUSLY DO THEIR JOBS FOR THE LOVE OF THE GAME.  HOW THIS RELATES TO THIS GAME, I HAVE NO IDEA, BUT I DO KNOW THAT THE WINNER IS EQUAL TO THE EIGHTH BEST TEAM IN THE PAC-10 SINCE CAL ALREADY BEAT TENNESSEE.  I WILL GO WITH THE SEC ATHLETES ON THIS ONE

AT&T Cotton

Missouri vs. Arkansas  Dallas  Jan. 1, 2008, 11:30 a.m.  FOX

I LOVE THIS GAME – MCFADDEN, DANIEL, JONES, MACLIN.  COULD BE THE BEST BOWL.  GOING WITH MISSOURI SINCE ARKANSAS CANNOT PASS.

Gator

Texas Tech vs. Virginia  Jacksonville, Fla.  Jan. 1, 2008, 1 p.m.  CBS

TEXAS TECH AS MUCH AS I HATE TO ADMIT IT, BUT DOUBT UVA CAN STOP 80 THROWS WE WILL SEE FROM GRAHAM HARRELL.  NOTE THAT HOWIE LONG’S SON CHRIS PLAYS FOR UVA AND IS A STUD.  AT LEAST HE WILL NOT HAVE TO WORRY ABOUT THE RUN.  OH, AND HOPE HE DOES NOT HAVE A FLATOP.  OH, UPDATE THAT FLORIDA QB JUST WON THE HEISMAN.  LET’S SEE, GUY IS 6’5” AND 235, RUNS LIKE A POWERFUL FULLBACK AND HAS A ROCKET ARM.  LED NATION OR CLOSE TO IT IN PASSING EFFICIENCY.  QBs FLORIDA, MAKING HIM BMOC, AND NOW HE OWNS A HEISMAN.  THE ONLY THING KEEPING HIM FROM SHAWN KEMP’S RECORD IS THAT THE ONLY MISSIONARY HE BELIEVES IN ARE HIS PARENTS (GO READ ABOUT HIM IF YOU DON’T GET THE REFERENCE; I CANNOT DO ALL THE WORK).

Capital One

Michigan vs. Florida  Orlando, Fla.  Jan. 1, 2008, 1 p.m.  ABC HD

FLORIDA.  SEE LAST YEAR’S TITLE GAME FOR REFERENCE.

Rose Bowl presented by Citi

Illinois vs. USC  Pasadena, Calif.  Jan. 1, 2008, 4:30 p.m.  ABC HD

HMMMM, NATIONAL TITLE CONTENDER V 3 LOSS TEAM FROM WEAK BIG 11.  GOING WITH THE TROJANS, ALTHOUGH WILL BE FUN TO WATCH JUICE WILLIAMS.  I IMAGINE THAT SC WILL HAVE A SPY ON HIM, ALTHOUGH THIS INSIGHTFUL DEFENSIVE PHILOSOPHY SEEMED TO ESCAPE OHIO STATE’S DEF COORDINATOR AS JUICE CONVERTED 3RD AND 7, 9, 2, AS WELL AS 4TH AND 1 ON THE FINAL CLOCK KILLING DRIVE.  NO TEAM THAT LOSES AT HOME TO 41 POINT UNDERDOG IS NATIONAL TITLE WORTHY, BUT USC SEEMS TO BE PEAKING.

Allstate Sugar

Hawaii vs. Georgia  New Orleans  Jan. 1, 2008, 8:30 p.m.  FOX

THE WAC IS WACK – UGA IN A ROUT; HAVEN’T YOU HEARD OF KNOWSHON, ALTHOUGH THIS IS A NO-WIN FOR KNOWSHON AND THE DAWGS – WIN AND YOU ARE SUPPOSED TO; LOSE AND YOU ARE A LAUGHINSTOCK.

Tostitos Fiesta

Oklahoma vs. West Virginia  Glendale, Ariz.  Jan. 2, 2008, 8 p.m.  FOX

OKLAHOMA IS PLAYING SOME OF THE BEST BALL AND IS TOTALLY BALANCED.  WVU, DESPITE MY ADMIRATION FOR THEIR CLOSE TO CAL BLUE AND GOLD UNIS, LOST AT HOME TO PITTSBURGH.  CANNOT HANG FOR 4 QUARTERS.  AND WTF WITH PAT WHITE, STEVE SLATON AND NOEL DEVINE?  FOR A SCHOOL, THAT GAVE US PACMAN JONES AND CHRIS HENRY, THESE GUYS ARE LATELY DISAPPOINTING BOTH ON THE FIELD AND OFF THE FIELD AS THEY ARE CREATING NO ACTION.  MAKE IT RAIN GUYS!

FedEx Orange

Virginia Tech vs. Kansas  Miami  Jan. 3, 2008, 8 p.m.  FOX

R U KIDDING ME.  KANSAS IS A NICE STORY, BUT VA TECH WILL RULE HERE.  KANSAS HAD AN RPI OF LIKE 109TH IN THE NATION – VA TECH WAS #1 IN COMPUTERS.  IF THEY BLOW THIS ONE, THEY SHOULD RENAME THE MICHAEL VICK VETERINARY CENTER (NOT TO MENTION THE MARCUS VICK TEENAGE ALCOHOLIC TREATMENT CENTER) AFTER JIM DRUCKENMILLER (HE SUPPOSEDLY HAD SOMETHING IN COMMON WITH OTHER ANIMALS TREATED BY VETS) AND JAMES DePoY (JUST SUCKING UP TO A FRIEND THAT PLAYED THERE).

International

Rutgers vs. Ball State  Toronto  Jan. 5, 2008, Noon  ESPN2 HD

WTF IS THIS BOWL AND HOW IS IT ON JANUARY 5TH.  I AM GOING WITH BALL STATE SINCE JASON WHITLOCK AND DAVE LETTERMEN WENT THERE AND THEY (BALL STATE, NOT WHITLOCK AND LETTERMEN) THROW A LOT.  TRUE, THEY ARE A MAC SCHOOL, BUT GOTTA PULL FOR THE LITTLE GUY.

GMAC

Bowling Green vs. Tulsa  Mobile, Ala.  Jan. 6, 2008, 8 p.m.  ESPN HD

NOT SURE WHAT THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN BOWLING GREEN AND BALL STATE IS (IN FACT, MAYBE LETTERMEN WENT TO BOWLING GREEN BUT I AM TOO LAZY TO RESEARCH THAT FACT), SO MAYBE IT IS BOWLING GREEN THAT THROWS A LOT.  I DO KNOW THAT TULSA CANNOT DEFEND, BUT REALLY, PICK EM ON THIS ONE.  TOO TIRED TO EVEN PRETEND THAT I CARE.  OH, WAIT, I DO CARE.  TULSA’S COACH LAST YEAR, KRAPTHROPE COACHED PRESEASON HEISMAN HOPEFUL JEFF BROHM (OR BRIAN?) OF LOUISVILLE TO A DISMAL RECORD THIS YEAR, AND TULSA’S NEW COACH THIS YEAR TOOK AS OFFENSIVE COORDINATOR, GUS MALZAHN, WHO THE PREVIOUS YEAR SPENT A SINGLE SEASON IN COLLEGE FOOTBALL AS ARKANSAS OFFENSIVE COORDINATOR.  THE REASON HOUSTON NUTT (ARKANSAS COACH UNTIL THIS YEAR BUT NOW MISSISSIPPI COACH) HIRED MALZAHN WAS SO THAT HIS QB IN HIGH SCHOOL, MITCH MUSTAIN, WOULD ATTEND ARKANSAS.  ANYWAY, LAST YEAR – 2006 – ARKANSAS MADE THE SEC CHAMPIONSHIP GAME, BUT MUSTAIN WAS IN AND OUT OF LINEUP AND HIS MOM COMPLAINED.  THIS LED TO DISSENSION OVER THE OFF SEASON, AND WHY NUTT SPENT THIS YEAR ON THE HOT SEAT, AND THEN JUMPED SHIP WHEN THE SEASON ENDED.  SO WHAT DOES THIS HAVE TO DO WITH ANYTHING?  TWO THINGS: 1) PROVES THAT I KNOW WAY WAY WAY TOO MUCH ABOUT COLLEGE FOOTBALL. 2) THAT I ALSO KNOW THAT MUSTAIN TRANSFERRED TO USC, WHICH PISSES ME OFF, SO I AM HOLDING IT AGAINST TULSA AND ROOTING FOR BOWLING GREEN.

Allstate BCS Championship Game

LSU vs. Ohio State  New Orleans  Jan. 7, 2008, 8 p.m.  FOX

LSU PLAYS THE MOST SELF INDUCED EXCITING GAMES IN THE LAND.  I ACTUALLY THINK THEIR OFFENSE IS SUSPECT AND HAVE LITTLE CONFIDENCE IN FLYNN WHO IS MEDIOCRE AT BEST AND RANKED LIKE 77TH IN THE NCAA PASSER EFFICIENCY REATING.  THEY WILL PROBABLY HAVE TO PLAY PERRILOUX MORE, IF HE HAS NOT BEEN IN A BAR FIGHT OR CAUGHT STEALING SOMETHING.  HOWEVER, I GOTS TO THINK THAT THE BIG 10 SUCKS AGAIN, AND THAT THE WINS OVER AKRON, KENT AND YOUNGSTOWN STATE DID NOT PREPARE THE BUCKEYES.  PERSONALLY DON’T LIKE EITHER TEAM, BUT LSU AT HOME (PRACTICALLY AS GAME IN NEW ORLEANS) AND HAVING BEEN TESTED WINS!  ONE CAVEAT: KEY TO VICTORY IS THAT THE SUPERDOME ACTUALLY WRITE DOWN THE YARD MARKERS EVERY FIVE YARDS LIKE LSU DOES AT THEIR HOME STADIUM; OTHERWISE, WITH AN OBVIOUSLY MATH DEFICIENT TEAM, THE TIGERS WILL NEVER KNOW WHERE THEY ARE ON THE FIELD SINCE 10 IS TOO BIG A NUMBER FOR THEM TO COUNT TO, RESULTING IN AN OHIO STATE WIN.

WE WILL SEE HOW I DID ON THE 8TH,

Where it all started

Posted by msgpdr on December 29, 2007

For those of you who have known me for a while, I have been writing for a while — long emails, but even prior to that, other items that entertained (me at least).  And goodness knows that prior to the calming influence of fatherhood (or is that the exhaustion?), I had a propensity to rant.  Anyway, below is an email thread that I sent to people written originally after my California Golden Bears had ascended to #2 in the nation, poised to be #1, only to lose at home to Oregon State.  What I did not know at the time was that was the the Bears were about to embark on an epic collapse by losing six of seven, and falling to tomorrow’s Armed Forces Bowl against the brave men of the Air Force Academy.  Nonetheless, this was the first ‘post’ that led to the one above which led to the blog.

OK, so our destiny was the Emerald Nut Bowl (maybe)

However, considering this is, with the exception of Cal, one of the more interesting and fun college football seasons, and considering that:

My hometown (SF) teams and Bandwagon (Seattle) teams are in the dumper:

Niners and Seahawks combined 6-10

Warriors and Sonics combined 0-10

Cal hoops gets no Love, holds the Mayo, and will have no Holliday (those are all players at USC and UCLA for the uninformed)

Giants have only a single 40+ future HOF and he cannot hit (Vizquel) and have not developed a non pitching prospect since Matt WIlliams (unless you count Pedro Feliz)

Mariners are only OK in a weak division, and if the Angels get A-Rod…..

So effectively i am free until Nate Longshore and DeSean suit up again next fall — if they are even starting for Cal

However, I am still in the running for for my Oregon WVU National Championship — albeit unlikely due to Kansas ascension.

See below if you are still a college football fan:

Subject: We control our own Destiny

I cannot give up on this team yet, despite our lack of a pass rush, so take these predictions to Vegas!

Current BCS Standings:

1 Ohio State – lose to Michigan in the Big House on Lloyd Carr’s final game as coach before being replaced by LSU’s Les Miles

LOST BEFORE MICHIGAN EVEN

2 South Florida – you f’ing kidding me; they lose at Rutgers on Thursday; plus, how dumb are the founders of this university – South ? Florida – 200 miles north of Miami

LIKE CAL, HAVE DROPPED OFF THE RADAR

3 Boston College  – loses to Va Tech

LOST TO FSU INSTEAD

4 LSU – loses to Auburn or at least cannot run the table through the SEC Championship game

ALMOST LOST TO AU AND UA, BUT NOW I THINK THEY RUN THE TABLE IN SEC AS NO ONE CAN HAVE THAT MANY MORE CLOSE GAMES; THEY WILL BE IN TITLE GAME

5 Oklahoma – my sources say they will lose to Texas Tech, but I am less confident on this one

THEY WILL FIGHT IT OUT WITH KANSAS — FIGURE THEY COME IN 3RD IN BCS

6 South Carolina – loses SEC championship

WILL NOT EVEN MAKE THAT

7 Kentucky – still tough SEC games to go

3 LOSSES ALREADY

8 Arizona State – lose to Cal – have to win this one, and lose AT Oregon

DID LOSE AT OREGON

9 West Virginia – probably win the weak Big East

THEY STILL WILL

10 Oregon – win out; they got Cal at home, and get ASU, USC and Oregon State at home, but we beat them, so……they get the second Pac 10 BCS bowl

STILL WIN OUT

11 Virginia Tech – win ACC championship

WHO CARES

12 California

13 Kansas – whatever, they cannot run the table for sure, unless Danny Manning is playing

I STILL THINK THEY LOSE TO MISSOURI OR OU IN THE BIG 12 TITLE GAME — BUT AMAZING STORY — THE CAL OF 2004 WITHOUT GETTING FUC*ED BY TEXAS

14 USC – lose at Oregon and at ASU

LOST AT OREGON — ASU MAY TAKE THEM AT HOME ON THANSKGIVING

15 Florida – tough one, they could come back and win SEC

TENNESEE OR GEORGIA WINS SEC EAST, AND NEITHER CAN GET TO TITLE GAME

16 Missouri – who cares, lose at least once more

MAY WIN OUT BUT LOST TO OKLAHOMA — TOO FAR BACK IN POLLS

17 Auburn – lose once more

TWICE MORE

18 Hawaii – they will f up – they suck

PLEASE

19 Virginia — Whatever

SHELLACKED MIAMI, BUT THE ACC IS FULL OF WUSSIES

20 Georgia – Whatever

LOSE IN SEC TITLE GAME IF THEY GET THAT FAR

21 Tennessee – they can keep winning to help our Strength of Schedule

COULD MAKE SEC FINAL BUT WILL LOSE TO LSU

22 Texas – who cares

I JUST HATE THEM, MORE THAN NOTRE DAME AND SC PERHAPS

23 Cincinnati  – who cares

WHO STILL CARES

24 Texas Tech – who cares

THEY SUCK

25 Michigan – beats Ohio State and wins Big Ten

DON’T EVEN CARE NOW THAT THEY LOST TO WISCONSIN

So we win out, get Rose Bowl, beat down Michigan

AMENDED TO WIN OUT AND PLAY IN EMERALD NUT BOWL AGAINST 4TH PLACE ACC TEAM OR WHO CARES.

So West Virginia plays Oregon in National Title game – I know, strange that Oregon stays in front of us when we win the pac 10, but those are computers for you

OREGON VERSUS LSU, UNLESS OUR TANKING HURTS OREGON TOO MUCH WITH THEIR ONE LOSS, LEAVING AN OPENING FOR EITHER OKLAHOMA OR UNDEFEATED KANSAS… WE WILL SEE

Initial Post

Posted by msgpdr on December 26, 2007

Well, despite my advanced age in Web2.0 years, I have decided to start a blog.  Admittedly, it will be one of 10-30 million that supposedly exist, it will not earn me any money, and it will not even be made public for search engines.  I don’t want my life that public.  After all, when I run for senate, any illicit postings could cost me the election.

The other reason for writing this is mainly because after my College Football 2007 emails, many people have written back to say “you should write for Espn.com,” or “you should start a blog.”  I figure that that both of these responses meant in actuality: “Quit spamming me.”

Now you can all subscribe to my blog via RSS, save the website in your favorites, or ignore it.
